What should I major in?
Although considering the potential career development and the prospect of a field is important, my major concern when choosing a major is still my interest. Thus, it is essential to understand myself thoroughly before making the most suitable choice.
My past experience and daily observation build up my understanding and enthusiasm in management and China studies. I was once the only person in charge of a school annual event, Christmas Programme. It was not an easy task for a novice to take charge of a grand event individually without much guidance. However, I was capable of holding it with huge success. Teachers and students speak highly of my contribution and giftedness in management. Through this experience, I discover my strength and interest in organizational activities and team coordination. Other than my experience, the rapid economic development of China also roused my curiosity in the success and surge of multi-national businesses. China, being one of the most influential countries, is worth spending time on taking a close examination. Therefore I choose Global Business System Management, Human Resources Management and China Business as my first priority in major.
Apart from my own preferences, I also take account of my ability. I identify myself as a patient, ambitious, careful and decisive person. I noticed my proficiency in analytical, communication, application and organization skills. Management comprises planning, organizing, leading, directing and controlling an organization as a team, while the study of China business requires high awareness and sensitivity to the change and development of China, as well as critical analysis of the growing trend in China’s business sectors. In comparison to the skills needed in the three mentioned majors, my strength seems to match the management sectors more. Therefore, my skills can be fully utilized in Global Business System Management and Human Resources Management.
Examining the potential career development of each major is a necessary step to take. Human resources management is the central function of business management in general and human resource management in particular. Knowing that only large companies call for human resources manager, the career path is narrowed to the demand of large firms. Small-scale firms do not have such department due to a small amount of employees. In contrast, Global business system management demonstrates practices of global business, financial analysis and information systems for managing international technology ventures which allows a wider development in different departments. Accordingly, major in global business system management is a more attractive choice.
Moreover, Global business system management can broaden my international horizon. Hong Kong as an international business centre involves working with countries from all over the world. This study can increase my exposure from locally to internationally. In addition to studying at City University, students in this major have to do exchange at one university in North America, Europe, or Australia, and at another one in the Greater China Region or Asia. This would allow me to be exposed to different culture as well as different managerial work in different places.
After close examination, I have chosen global business system management as my major. Albert Einstein once said, ‘Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.’ No one knows whether it is the best choice for me, but I believe this is my most suitable choice so far.
